Governor's Three Star Award
Class of 1994

  
   
 Leadership Bedford Class of 1994 was responsible for certifying Bedford County as a Governor's Three-Star Community through the State of Tennessee. This award is given to communities who are actively involved in preservation of existing employment, creation of new employment opportunities, improving family income and developing a strong leadership base economic development. Certification under the Three-Star Program requires maintenance of a formal economic development organization with an annual work
program, including

calls for maintenance of adequate infrastructure capable of supporting economic development, as well as availability of developed industrial acreage. Community and counties earning the Award undergo re-certification by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development yearly to assure that standards of preparedness for economic growth have been sustained locally. Bedford County has successfully completed criteria to be re-certified for the fifth year in a row.

Quest For Excellence
Class of 1995


     Leadership Bedford Class of 1995 developed a non-profit agency called "Quest for Excellence" to facilitate educational excellence. Through this non-profit organization.  $1,000 (tuition only) scholarships were awarded to Bedford County residents with plans to attend an accredited college. There were $250 scholarships available for those wanting to enroll in a accredited vocational school.  In addition to the scholarships Quest for Excellence also sponsored educational resource grants was to provide additional educational resources for equipment., materials, and supplies.
 

The Telecommunication Center
Class of 1996


     Leadership Bedford Class of 1996 made a recommendation to the Upper Duck River Development Agency concerning the establishment of a Telecommunications Center in Shelbyville, TN.  The telecommunications center was established at the Tennessee Technology Center and has been up and running since early 1999.  The Center offers access to the "telecommunication super highway" with a local Internet node, teleconferencing and distance learning by way of videoconferencing. Videoconferencing is the use of two-way video and audio equipment for interactive communicating at a distance.
 

Youth Leadership Bedford
Class of 1997


     Leadership Bedford Class of 1997 organized a Youth Leadership Bedford Class.  This program was open to all Bedford County students that were Juniors or seniors in high school.  Students interested in applying for  Youth Leadership completed an application and paid a $50 entrance fee.  This Class worked with Leadership Bedford and attended monthly class days.
 

Celebration Station
Class of 1998

 Leadership Bedford Class of 1998 coordinated the construction of a community playground called "Celebration Station" which has been designed and named by Bedford County student.  The playground replaced the existing playground in H. V. Griffin Park. Community volunteers constructed the

20.000 square foot park in April 1999.  Leadership Bedford applied and received a grant of $60,000 from the Tennessee Parks and Recreation Department.  The total price tag of the "Celebration Station" was $142,500.  Local businesses and  civic groups as well as fund-raisers contributed to the cost of the playground.

Wake up Never Rest Park !
Class of  2000


   
 
    
The Leadership Bedford Class of 2000's projects was the revitalization of Never Rest Park., a 10-acre park in Shelbyville. The project was designed as a Tennessee Looks Good To Me project, a state-wide community improvement program, which provided a $5,000 grant. The class raised an additional $15,000 from community businesses, civil groups, and citizens. A project

 October 2000work week will see community volunteers install new landscaping throughout the park, refurbish and paint the playground equipment, install new picnic tables, benches, and trash receptacles, create a new parking area, install fencing to enhance the safety of the riverside picnic area, and provide new signage and a memorial at the park's entrance.

Bedford Beginnings
Class of  2001

    
    
Leadership Bedford Class of 2001 formed a youth leadership Bedford program entitled Bedford Beginnings. This program is open to all Bedford County students that are juniors in high school. Each student can apply at the end of their sophomore year 10 students will be chosen to participate during their junior year. At least one student should come from each of the five high schools, public and private, in the county. The students attend a one day orientation and participate in class days along with the Leadership Bedford Class. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to one participant in the class upon graduation. The students will write an essay pertaining to the announcement topic and a panel of judges will determine the winning essay. 
 

 

Bell Buckle Amphitheater
Class of  2002

     
    
  Leadership Bedford class of 2002 wanted to build an Amphitheatre in the Shelbyville Park, but was contacted by the Bell Buckle Park to help them with the Amphitheatre that they had already planned on building in the new Bell Buckle Park being constructed. The class chose to use the funds raised and partners with the new Bell Buckle Park. The blue prints were modified to fit the Bell Buckle area and the design flow of the park for a  more suitable Amphitheatre. As of 2006 those plans are still underway and construction should begin soon.
 

 

Butterfly Point
Class of  2003


    
Leadership Bedford Class of 2003 combined their efforts with that of the Fly Art Building (which is currently being restored) to build an entrance to the walking path that runs down behind the Fly Building to the Duck River. The project consisted of a gazebo with seating in the shape of butterflies.

 


     
Beautiful landscaping with trees and shrubs and flowers transformed an empty area to the side of the Fly Building into a very nice setting. Materials and labor were donated by class members, businesses and individuals in the community to complete this project.

 

 

Habitat for Humanity
Class of  2004

    
  
 
The Leadership Bedford Class of 2004 decided to join Habitat for Humanity and help build a house in Shelbyville. Each class member committed themselves to work a  certain number of hours on the

Class of  2005


    
The Leadership Bedford Class of 2005 had good intentions of completing a project, however the project they chose was decided against by the very persons who wanted the Leadership Bedford Class to tackle this project. Funds were going to be supplied to refurbish the caboose at Wartrace.
 

     

    
    
The Wartrace Chamber had applied for a grant to cover expenses, and then decided not to move forward with the project. Since the class had not raised any funds before hand, the class decided not to start all over with another project.
 

 

Landscaping The Airport
Class of  2006


    
The Leadership Bedford Class of 2006 did a small fundraising project with material and labor donated. They landscaped the entrance to the Shelbyville Municipal Airport, along with supplying them with picnic tables and trash receptacles. These were placed behind the building in a picnic area for viewing the planes flying in and out of the airport. They enhanced the look of the airport which

has been an increases of traffic over the past couple of years with Wal-Mart distribution and other officials flying into Shelbyville. The class focused on the that the airport is the first impression some people see when traveling to our community and a good impression is important. The landscaping helped beautify this area and make it a welcoming sight.

 

Delivering Easter Baskets
Class of 2007


    
The Leadership Bedford Class of 2006 - 2007 assembled and delivered Easter baskets to needy families for there class project. The class's goal is to obtain enough food to provide Easter meals for 50 families with children throughout

a frozen chicken, green beans, carrots, rolls, potatoes, corn, macaroni and cheese, fruit and a boxed dessert. The class has been working with area schools and churches to accomplish the goal and also wants two corporate sponsors as well.
